4ESO - SCIENCE LAB PROJECT

Our Science Lab project receives an Honourable Mention in the Castilla y León Research and Innovation Awards

Students from Science Lab at IES Cardenal López de Mendoza have received an Honourable Mention for their research and innovation project in Compulsory Secondary Education, as part of the awards organised by the Regional Ministry of Education of Castilla y León.
The project, entitled “CyL comes back to life”, was developed in the classroom as an applied research project focused on the early recovery of burnt soils after a forest fire. Using soil collected from an area affected by fire in El Bierzo, students designed an experiment with different natural treatments to study how to improve key soil functions: water infiltration, protection against erosion and the recovery of vegetation cover.

Throughout the project, students worked as a real scientific team: they proposed hypotheses, designed tests, collected data, compared results and presented their conclusions before a jury. Beyond the final result, this experience has shown that school science can address real environmental problems and propose meaningful, rigorous and applicable solutions.
The jury especially highlighted the applicability of the project, a particularly valuable recognition because it connects classroom learning with one of the major environmental challenges in our region: ecosystem restoration after wildfires.
This mention encourages us to continue promoting science education based on research, creativity, teamwork and environmental commitment.
Congratulations to all the students involved for their effort, responsibility and excellent presentation of the project. The greatest reward is seeing that science born in the classroom can help us look at the world through new eyes.
